Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Welcome Trey Anastasio In Mexico [Videos]

Dave Matthews and his guitar compadre, Tim Reynolds, welcomed Phish‘s Trey Anastasio for a two-song sit-in on Sunday night during their destination event at the Moon Palace resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. The appearance saw Anastasio perform Phish’s “Waste” along with Matthews’ “Everyday”.

As many will remember, this was not the first time that Trey had joined Dave and Tim in Mexico. While Anastasio and Matthews have a long history of collaboration, a similar scene played out during their last trip to Mexico in early 2020. On February 16th, 2020, Anastasio sat in for a take on “Waste” and “Bathtub Gin” during Dave and Tim’s final set of the weekend.

Much like the convocation two years ago, Trey once again arrived in Mexico a few days before Phish’s Riviera Maya destination event at the Moon Palace resort, joining Dave and Tim for a couple of songs during the first of three encores. The trio started with the familiar “Waste”, which Matthews recorded for the 2000 Phish tribute album, Sharin’ In The Groove, and performed live several times over the past 22 years. This take on “Waste” saw Trey and Dave trade vocals throughout the song as all three musicians on stage strummed along with their acoustic guitars.

Unlike the last meeting in Mexico, Trey also provided his services on a Dave Matthews Band original, “Everyday”, which appeared as the title track to the group’s 2001 album. Matthews handled the lead vocal work for the majority of this offering before the crowd joined in towards the tail end. While there was no extensive jamming, the three guitarists displayed some interplay and traded some solo lines for a few measures as the song came to its end.
