When Sandra Steinbach first stepped into this 1920s Lakewood home, she said she knew immediately that it was the right choice for her family. The family had decided to move to Lakewood from their Casa Linda neighborhood, and this home was the first one Steinbach toured.
“I just fell in love, that’s all I can say,” she said. “And I stayed in love with it.”
The Steinbachs — Sandra, her husband, Herb, and the three children they raised in the home — were only the second owners of the home when they purchased it in 1972.
She said that she has felt like the curator of a museum in her time owning the property. Many details in the home have been preserved for nearly a century.
The home at 7030 Tokalon Drive was originally built for the Lacy family in 1929. According to recent research done by Carol Roark for Preservation Dallas, Lester Lacy founded one of the early construction firms in the city, L.H. Lacy Co. The Lacys employed architect Vern E. Shanklin to design the home, according to Roark’s research.
The home has three bedrooms, three bathrooms and one half-bathroom in its 4,744 square feet. The foyer opens to a living room that’s painted in the original green color, which Steinbach said she preserved because Lacy, the original owner, requested it.
“I’m so glad because it makes the house feel timeless,” she said.

The room has other preserved details like parquet flooring, leaded glass windows and plaster filigree on the walls. The formal dining room has a fireplace, wood paneling on the walls, parquet flooring and a coved ceiling, according to the listing.
Steinbach said the sunroom is her favorite room because of the views it offers. All of the bedrooms are on the second level of the home. The primary suite has an en suite bathroom, a walk-in closet and an adjacent office. The bathrooms have a preserved, vintage look thanks to the colorful tiles, bathtubs and sinks. There’s also a library at the top of the stairs that has built-in bookcases and views of the front of the property from a small Juliet balcony. The home also has a basement with a family room and a den.
Outside, you’ll find a one-bedroom cottage that adds an additional 1,284 square feet of living space to the property.
Steinbach said she thinks the home was good for her family because it made them slow down.
“Everything in the house is rather on purpose, so you become purposeful and focused,” she said.
Steinbach, who recently celebrated her 86th birthday, said that selling their beloved family home has been a positive experience. The family is happy to see it go to a new owner. Now she and her husband have moved back to Casa Linda, where they lived before the Tokalon house.
Steinbach recalled an exchange she had with the original owner, Lester Lacy, in the stairway when they were moving in. She said she found herself getting teary-eyed about the family history associated with the home that they were taking on. Lacy said it was worth it to him “to see tricycles in the front yard.”
“That’s exactly the way I feel now,” she said. “I want to see tricycles in the front yard. I’m ready to relinquish.”
The home is on the market for $2.5 million, listed by Rob Elmore of Dave Perry-Miller Real Estate.
